Pennsylvania was one of the biggest colonies, in terms of size and population. Its population in 1770 was close to 240,000, second only to Virginia. Every decade the colony grew by almost 30%. The distribution between the genders in Pennsylvania was really close to being equal, but there were slightly more men in the colony. Colonial Pennsylvania was the melting pot of all the colonies, with people from all over the world coming to live here. English, German, Scottish-Irish, French, Dutch and Swedish all traveled so they could begin their new life in Pennsylvania. All the people from around the world each provided a unique skill set to the economy, for example Germans brought their knowledge of manufacturing while English settlers had more experience with farming.
Much of the population of Pennsylvania was uneducated, like most of the world at the time. Education was only for the wealthy and prominent figures in society. During the 18th century complete religious freedom was only in few places around the world, and Pennsylvania was one of them. Most of the colony comprised of Quakers, because they were the ones who moved to Pennsylvania originally, but minorities included Anglicans and Jews.
